BRIEF
WHAT PRODUCTIONS AND AGE RANGE
For this project titled 'Be Creative' which is basically unit 9 and 10 both put together. We have to make two productions which are either: music video, short film or stop motion. We have to do two of these ideas and they have to be two different productions. For example you cannot do two music videos you have to have a variation like a music video and a stop motion. Personally I have decided on making a music video and a short film as I believe this will be a good mix of playing to my strengths yet challenging myself and doing something in which I have never done before. As I have made three short films previous, this means I know the process and the potentially errors which could occur as I go along. Yet, I have never completed a music video. I think this will be really interesting as I really love music videos if they are done correctly with the right amount of narrative to them. All in all I think this project could be success.
|
As well as this I had to choose a chosen age range for my short film and music video. The choices were: 5-12 or 25-40 years old. The reason these age ranges didn't cover my personal age is due to we cannot copy work from project to project. So in order to do my actual age demographic for my final major project I will have to do one different to that now. I struggled in weighing up the pros and cons for both age groups. But, I just had to focus on what I wanted within the production, and for me personally I want it to be more adult like and use more complex language forms. Also, I had to keep in mind how accessible it would be to interview people in this age range and get them to answer my surveys. Due to all these factors I decided to go with the age range 25-40. I think I will be able to make two productions which allow this age range to relate to them as well as enjoy them.

MINDMAPS
MUSIC VIDEO MINDMAP
MUSIC VIDEO MINDMAP:
This is the mind map surrounding the initial ideas for the music video for this production. Due to the age range of this production being targeted towards 25-40 years old I had to think about the type of music this age demographic would listen to and the ideas and themes they would enjoy to watch on screen. After doing research surrounding popular music in the time of the 90s, as I thought this would be the era for this age group, I discovered that grunge and alternative music was very popular as this point. Bands such as Oasis, Nirvana and Blur were all very in. I wanted to use the music my audience listen to as this would automatically grasp their attention. |
I had to come up with three developed ideas which could become my potential music video. From there I would get others opinions on them to see if they thought the music videos were good enough for my target audience. The first idea in which I had was about a heist where the main two characters were Bonnie and Clyde esk as they were stealing from shops and taking cars. I thought the action elements would relate to an older audience as gun scenes wouldn't be suitable for younger children. The second idea in which I had accumulated for my production was about a man looking through an old photo album and how he goes into the album. The man will relive all his old memories and see where his life would go if he took a different path. I thought the target audience would appreciate this as they are mature enough to dwell on their life and their childhood and all the memories there. The final idea for my music videos were of a man behind a shot. As the bullet is flying through the air all the past memories and events leading up to the shooting are shown, life flashing before your eyes. The parallel edit between the past and reality will make the scene very raw and emotional.
As well as coming up with these three potential ideas I also wrote out a list of songs in which would be popular at these time and the time of people who lived through the 90s, the non-consumer generation. |
SHORT FILM MINDMAP
SHORT FILM MIND MAP:
This is the mind map for my short film. Basically, it's a collective of ideas surrounding what I could make for my next short film. I had to keep in mind the target audience I am directing this short film towards, which is 25-40 year olds. This means that the films need to be clever, well thought out with a clear narrative structure. I very much struggled in coming up with short film ideas as I was getting so focused on the music video ideas, yet I am actually more proud with the ideas in which I came up for with the short film. |
The first idea in which I came up with was set on the theme about 'what if'. In the short film there would be a women who has just discovered that she cannot have children, she is sat in a park looking out into the children's playground where she sees a little boy on his own. In a split moment of irrational thinking she takes the boy, the film will show the boy growing older under the care of this women unclear to the fact that he has been kidnapped. Finally, at the end we realise it was the women daydreaming and thinking about it, rather then actually doing the deed. This would be very good for my age demographic as most people in this age range would have kids and if not they may be thinking about having some. And they would really buy into the story. The second idea I came up with is about Karma and being positive, it will show the same day yet with two versions of the same person. One being positive and the other being negative and it should follow the events of their day and how your emotional state can change your whole day. The final idea is about a five pound note and how its journey/life in a week. We will follow the five pounds as its passed on to person to person and we will discover something new and different from each person who has the money for a bit. Each person who has the money will have a different story to tell, if this is to do with class, race, status anything really.

FOCUS GROUP
This is my focus group for my production. In this focus group I had three other peers help discuss the ideas in which I had accumulated for both my music video and short film. I did this as I really wanted to get an second opinion which could give me ideas on how to adapt my productions to make them better for my target audience and to be overall engaging towards the audience. The results from this focus group uncovered that for my music video the better idea was the heist about Bonnie and Clyde as it's different and original. The focus group said I could really make sure I show the emotional side and relationship of the characters on screen as well as this I could have flashbacks within the narrative showing how the characters met and got to now one and other. For my short film the focus group decided that the £5 note travelling from person to person idea, the group said that this idea would relate to anyone as everyone understands the concept of money and how it passes on to person to person. For improvements with my production they suggested I have clear characters for each person who has the £5 for a bit. This will ensure I will be able to write the script easily around each of these characters and for the storyline to be relatable and emotional.
SURVEY ON ALL IDEAS
The second question within the survey is targeted for music videos. The question is 'Which ideas is most appropriate for my target audience 25-40 year old?' I wanted to see which idea fitted the best with my age demographic for the production. The results show that 90% of those asked agreed that the heist idea of my production fits the best for my productions. This is followed by idea two which is going into the photo album which 10% of those asked said it fitted the target audience the most. Thirdly was idea three which was flashing before your eyes. This question illustrates to me what production is most suited and therefore which production idea to do.
For question four of my survey I asked 'Which idea is most appropriate for my target audience 25-40 year old'. This would give e an indication in which project would work well for my demographic of my target audience. For this question 90% of those asked said the £5 idea worked the best for being appropriate for the audience. As well as this 10% of those asked said the kidnap idea and nobody said the person splitting into idea. This shows to me that I should go forward with the £5 note idea as majority of people are saying its appropriate for my target audience as well as it being the best idea. This is why I shall go forward with this idea.
|
This survey I asked questions about all my ideas for both my music video and short film. The first question was directed towards music videos idea. The first question I wrote was 'Which idea do you think is the best?' the highest response was idea one which is the Bonnie and Clyde idea which resulted in 90% of those asked saying they like this one. The second idea in which I got the highest response was the flashing life before you eyes in which I got 10% for. The third ideas in which is about someone going into a photo album got 0%. These results show me that my strongest idea is the heist one and that I should use this as the idea going forward for my production. For this set of questions it was focused on my short film ideas. The question asked was 'What idea do you like the best?' and the results were very one sided. 90% of those asked stated that they liked the £5 short film idea where the story follows the journey of a £5 as it passes onto different people throughout a time space of a week/few days. The second idea in which I got the highest response for was the kidnap idea this is what 10% of people agreed on. And thirdly the split into two idea got zero response for. Overall this shows to me that the £5 journey short film is the most like and popular idea. This is an potential idea in which I could use for my short film.

SURVEY ON 2 IDEAS
This is the second survey in which I sent out to my target audience and peers. I chose the two best ideas, according to the previous survey, which are the heist music video and the £5 note short film. I did a second survey to uncover all the good aspects, bad parts and things in which I need to improve. I will do this so I can develop my idea and overall improve it so its better for my target audience/
This is the first question within my survey, the question asked is followed up after the description of the music video idea I like the most. This music video is the heist one which has Bonnie and Clyde implements within it. I chose this one as I personally thought it was the most creative/fun idea I had out of the lot and I have many ideas on how I could go about shooting or editing the video together. The first question within my survey I asked 'Do you think the age range is appropriate for 25-40 year olds?' and the response for this question resulted in 100% of those asked saying yes. This means that everyone thinks that my chosen target audience would be engage within my idea and find it interesting. This is great feedback to receive as it is really important for me that my production has met my target audience effectively. |
This is the second questions within my survey which asks 'Do you think the idea is appropriate for the age range, why? why not?'. For this question I received mainly positive feedback. Many spoke about the adult like themes within the music video ' Yes I do, as its action and can gave some serious 'adult like' themes such as murder and stealing'. Basically, the people answering the survey were saying because of the nature of the music video containing all these adult like things it makes it suitable for this demographic and definitely not anyone younger. Someone also commented on the music being used 'I do think its appropriate as its a popular 90s song which people in the age range will know and heard of'. This is talking about the song choice of 'Sexx Law' by Beck. The song time will make the production age appropriate as this is the music of this generation.
|
For question three within the survey I asked the people who filled out my survey 'Do you like the idea?'. The response for this survey was great as 100% of those asked said they liked the idea. I thought this was amazing as I wasn't too sure what people would think of the idea or even if they understood the vision I was going to go for within the production. By doing this survey it has really helped in finding out exactly what people think about my project, to get a straight and honest answer. |
For question four I asked the people who filled out my survey 'What do you like about the idea?' I asked this question so I would no for sure what elements of my ideas to keep when changing and adapting the music video to fit better for my target audience. The response were quite diverse, this shows to me that there are a few good elements within my production that people will like and enjoy. For example, one person said 'I like the fact it's based on Bonnie and Clyde as they are interesting characters', to me I get the idea the fact that Bonnie and Clyde involved makes the production more appealing. Maybe this is due to these people actually be real life people, so therefore having a bit of a historical implement within the production. Other people seemed to like that the production is about a heist 'I like the idea of a heist video as it will be fast paced and interesting to watch', the fact that the music video is action packed and quick will definitely add to the audience engagement. Overall, I think there is a lot of positive feedback to focus on.
|
For question five I asked the audience 'What do you think I could change to make my idea better?' I got a lot of really good constructive feedback which involved ideas in ways that I could develop my music video idea to make it better. One idea that stuck out to me was 'You could have a singer, which sings section of the music video' this is a really good idea in which we see a lot in music videos. You will have the narrative section occurring and then it will cut back to the singer who is singing about it all. Someone else said 'You could have flashbacks of the characters past to give them more depth', I love this idea as especially with an older more mature audience they want something more then fighting and stealing. They want depth to the characters so they can really get behind them and support them. We could do the back story of how Bonnie and Clyde met.
|
Question six is actually for the short film aspect of this survey. I basically wrote out a summary of the short film I wanted to go with, therefore this questions and the ones after it are all four the short film idea. The idea I went for with the short film was the one about the £5 and its journey from person to person and the stories of those the money is held by. With this question 100% of those asked said that this was an age appropriate short film for my target audience of 25-40 years old. I am really happy with this feedback as this means that my short film will be enjoyable for my target audience which is one of the biggest challenges within this unit.
|
For question seven, for my feedback on my short film, the response was very positive. Many people responses said the idea was age appropriate and gave evidence for it. For example, many wrote upon the fact that money was a big theme within the production 'this age range will relate to money and the importance of it' as well as seeing the 'different cultures and stories' surrounding it. Because money is such a universal topic which is very common for adults to discuss they will be able to relate to the characters within the short film to their own personal stand point. People have also pointed out that some of the characters will be in the same demographic as the target audience, thus making the short film even more relatable and interesting.
|
For question eight within the survey I asked the question 'What do you like about the idea?', I asked this as I wanted to know the elements in which I should keep within my ideas, before I go and alter and change parts. The response for this question was really good. One person said 'I like how the story passes onto different people. The narrative structure changes and develops', the narrative structure for this production is very unique and different to anything I have actually seen. This makes me believe that the production will be engaging to the audience watching it. Another person said 'I like the fact there isn't just one main character its numerous people' I think this is a really good point. Due to their being different people within the film everyone will find someone in which they can relate to.
|
For question nine of the survey I asked 'What do you think I could change to make the idea better?'. My favourite response was 'the person who has the money to begin with ends up with it. It shows where our money goes', this is a really cool concept and will be a really good conclusion to my short film. It almost shows that's spending and life is just a repeating process on loop. As well as this somebody else wrote 'I think you could have some form of twist at the end', which again goes back to the first point of loop of money. This could be the 'twist' at the end in a sense. Another person wrote 'make the story less repetitive and actually have different storylines within the story', I definitely want to do this by adding depth to each character I show and make them more human and relatable to the audience.

DEVELOPED IDEAS
MUSIC VIDEO
The music video in which I have decided on is a heist music video which includes robbing stores and stealing cars and the main characters are based of Bonnie and Clyde. This whole music video will be to the 90s classic song 'Sexx Law' which is sung by Beck. The song is an upbeat alternative song which will fit perfectly for the mood of the music video and will also be known by our target audience as this was their era of music. Basically, meaning that the target audience will hopefully really like the idea of the music video. Here is the song 'Sexx Law' by Beck.
When researching I found this Avicii music video which is very similar in terms of storyline of what I want to achieve. However, I want my music video to be more comedic and tongue and cheek.
|
Storyline
The music video will begin with a couple (Bonnie and Clyde) having their mugshots taken in the police station. Then the music video will reverse back in time to show the events leading up to this moment. It will show various robberies at different stores, both characters opening registers by waving their guns out. There will be another sequence of them breaking into a car and driving away. Meanwhile while this is all happening the police are after them. The end of the music results in the outcome in the beginning where the characters have been arrested. |
SHORT FILM
The short film idea in which I have decided to go forward with is ‘The Note’, which is the idea about a five-pound note travelling around from different people. We get to experience the lives of those with the five-pound note and how we may all be human yet we all walk different forms of life. This could be shown through cultural, age and ethnic difference. I have looked at different narrative style in which I could use for my short film in order to capture the emotion correctly. I decided on going with a linear narrative as we follow the life of the five-pound note as if we are the five-pound note. This will ensure the audience gets that emotional attachment with the money and feel as if they have been taken on a journey too.
When explaining the storyline too my teachers there was issues, this is due to some of my classmates having a very similar concept of short film as mine. To stop confusion and risk of all having the same short film I adapted my idea to make it more original. The five-pound note within the production will be the old five-pound note, it shows the ‘end of life’ of the old five-pound note and shows the lives its touched at the end of the film it gets exchanged for the new version of five-pounds. This is to show all those memories with the old will be wiped away and because the new ones are made of plastic like material they are hard to trace or leave your mark on. The emotional attachment and memories will be left with the old five-pound note. To help with this short film I further researched into different short films, which were the same genre of my short film: psychological drama. For example, the short film ‘UNBELEIVABLE’ even though I had a completely different story line to this short film I looked at the nuances within it for example the camera angles, the lighting and how they told a story. All of this would impact the emotion and how the audience felt watching it. By watching different productions I was able to visualise in more detail how I could go about making my short film possible. This is an mind map on the development of my short film. From where it came from just an initial idea to the well thought out piece. |
The storyline step by step
- Begins with old woman getting five pounds out at the cash point - Old woman then writes a birthday card and puts the five pound inside of it - Cuts to boy on his birthday blowing out his candles, he receives the birthday card - Montage of boy counting down the days till he can spend his money - Shows boy on his way to buy the toy, he walks past a homeless girl - Boy gives the money to the homeless girl instead - Homeless girl holds money and then goes to find food - On her way sees a drug dealer and buys drugs with the money instead - The Drug dealer gets a text message saying to come home ‘ASAP’ - He runs home to see his grandad coughing in bed - He pays the person caring for his grandad - The carer returns home after a long day at work - Carer goes to sleep - Wakes up to her mum opening the curtains to wake her up - The mum sees the money on the side and then decides to take it to the bank - She gets it changed for the new five pound note - Montage of the memories had with the old five pound note and the people who had the money |
