WHY I SHOULD CHOOSE THIS ROUTE
I do want to attend Universities. However, if for some reason I change my mind or cannot get into University this will be my reasoning behind it all. First of all by not going to University I am saving a lot of money from student loans, resident fees and general costs for food and a social life. This all means that I will not create a huge amount of debt for myself in which I will have to pay of for the rest of my life. Another reason for anti University is networking, everyone understands that in the film industry 'its not what you know rather who you know'. So if you have those communication skills to network and gain contacts then you will be able to land yourself a job or a role. You do not need a degree in order to network, its all about confidence and being persistent with people. Also, a third reason you don't need to go to University for film production is that with any media and creative outlet jobs you have to work your way up in order to get them top jobs. This could be working as an intern, then a runner, then in charge of the runner etc. So what's the point in going to University if anyway can start at the bottom and work their way up. I believe I have the determination and motivation to find myself work within the industry without any form of degree.
HOW DO YOU BREAK INTO THE MEDIA INDUSTRY
This is an article in which I discovered about how to break into the film industry. The person who did the research gives steps in order to succeed and get a job within the industry for example pick the correct A levels. Discover apprenticeships which are film related. Overall, this means you will be able to gain experience and build your way up in the world.
Getting in the film industry
This article explain different root in which you can take in order to get into the film industry. They say you can either go down the apprenticeship or university root. The best advice they said was go for a course with a creative skillset tick, this guarantees the course you are doing is practical and fun and isn't so theoretical.
The website has links to potential internships/ apprenticeships I could have in order to get my name out in the industry. I really like this plan because I think getting into the film industry is more about what you know rather then who you know and by making contacts and doing practical work you are really putting yourself out there to discover things and get known by others. I think this will work with my personality traits, due to me being self motivated and independent I will be able to find internships and apprenticeships and work hard in them to making contacts and potentially getting a job. |
WHAT ARE INTERNSHIPS?
An internship nowadays is seen better then getting a degree in some sense due to employers wanting to employ somebody who already has past experience and understands their new job title fully. This is where internships come in, an internship is period of work which can be from one week to even twelve months in length, in which an employee gives a student or a graduate a job in which relates to their field of study. It can be paid or voluntary work. The 'on the job' work is beneficial when earning new skills such as creative problem solving, presentation skills and communication skills. An internship will give you a real insight into the field of work and show the reality of your chosen career.

INTERNSHIPS
How much you get paid?
You don't get paid for this internship due to it being voluntary and usually accepted because of the experience rather then the payment. Would it be worth it? I think this role will be worth it due to travel and food costs being covered by the company. This means you will not have to pay large sums in order to work. However, the role isn't as good because there is no payment I can get if I do this work and it is only 3 months in length, not that long. However, saying that they did say there is potential for you to be accepted as a permanent worker if you succeed in the job role. |

I do not get paid any amount for this role as its is a voluntary internship in which I get paid in experience and a portfolio rather than money. Would it be worth it? I think this role will be worth it as I can improve my skills and make contacts within the industry whilst doing practical work and gaining a portfolio. My transport and food expenses are also covered for which means I am not sending a huge amount to get to and thro from the job. |
How much I will be paid?
The internship has clarified it will pay for the work I do at the company, however due to not posting an established sum I am guessing it's not a lot. However, I am more interested in gaining experience, contacts and growing my CV further. Would it be worth it? I believe this internship will be worth it due to getting lots experience out of the whole process and really helping you grow your portfolio. The job is paid for as well which is a bonus, so you can have some money on the side for the role. However, the only let down is that travel and food expenses aren't covered, like the other internships are. This may due to this internship actually paying money for the work, where as the other roles don't pay. |

I am not paid for this role or any of my costs such as travelling are covered. Due to this I don't think this internship is the best internship to take. It is limited amount of time makes it awkward in making contacts and even producing enough work to get a full portfolio of produced items. Therefore, I do not think this internship is actually worth the effort I would put into it.

INTERNSHIPS ABROAD
Film production Internship in Tanzania
I found this internship which is a project abroad film production in Tanzania. This internship is for both students and professionals with experience in journalism, media and film production. The interns are needed to help lead film production workshops and expose local culture to film production in Africa. The youth training institute where I will work as a film production intern focuses on empowering and training young people in all aspects of filmmaking for example sound design, creative storytelling and editing. Every year 45 Tanzanian students, are selected to take part in the special training course. The students will be taught a wide range of subject for example audio-visual production. As an intern my role will be to interact and train these young people with these creative and technical skills.
What I love about this course is giving under privilege children to have the opportunity to do something fun and enjoyable and learn something. I will learn how to teach people and work well in big teams. I love the sound of this abroad internship. Also, the fact that this internship is only four weeks, works out just a perfect amount of time for an abroad internship. I will be able to experience new culture in a short but good amount of time. |
Film Internship in India
This internship also looks amazing, its an internship working with a Bollywood production company. Bollywood films are very well known and high grossing films to watch out for so that this course is focusing within this industry it's amazing. Adding to this there are many aspiring actors, directors and producer within this industry giving room for me to show off my skills and make contacts. The internship seems very 'hands on' in comparison to other internships I have seen. I will have to set up scenes, do camera equipment management, scene shooting and editing. This will be amazing experience to receive and will look amazingly on my CV.
This could be a potential choice in which I make, just due to this being such good experience. Working alongside a real production company and helping put together a film. This will look amazing on my CV and in interviews in the future. I believe I will learn a lot front on by taking this internship. |
UNIVERSITY OR INTERNSHIP?
Concluding from all the information I have received both through my research on university and internships. Even though there are pros and cons to both choices I believe that going to university is the right decision for me. This is due to I want to further learn and discover how to use filming equipment or how to set up a specific scene, this knowledge I will learn all at university. I will have access to many great facilities and equipment, thus meaning I can produce high quality production in which I can show on my portfolio when trying to get a job in the future. Also, at university everyone around you are in the exact same position and are at the same level, this gives the course a sense of excitement which I am sure will make the whole experience more enjoyable. Rather then with an internship being with professional at a higher level who do the same thing day in day out. Even though internships give you experience and give you real life situations to discuss when interview, a degree will always make you stand out and give you that extra level of education. Some jobs you cannot get without a certain level of qualification and with an internship you will not be able to receive that level of education. Universities are very expensive and will cause me to have many student loans, however I will have chance to talk to professional who come in for guest lecturers and make contacts. I see this massive fund as an investment into my future. It may be a lot of money but I believe the degree will do me better then an internship. However, if I do struggle to get a job after finishing university I may look into doing internships to give me that extra edge of experience.
