WHY I WANT TO GO TO UNIVERSITY
I think going to University will be the best option for my. This is due to many reasons, one being I personally don't feel ready to go to start working full time and finish educations and also I think by having a degree I will further my knowledge I know about film production and pick up new skills which will look really good when I need to be employed. As well as this I can make connections and contacts with professionals within the industry, also a degree does look better when you are going up for a position at a company. Personally, my trait would work well in an university environment for example I am independent, patient and motivated. Overall, this shows that University would work as a good option for. I will get to see more of the world and study a subject in which I am really passionate about.

BA (hons) Film
One course in which I am interested in is the BA (hons) Film which is at the University of South Wales. This is a three year course which has the creative skill set tick meaning it will have a lot of practical elements within the course as well as some written to go alongside it. Student benefit from professional standard lecturers by professionals who work within the industry. When visiting a university fair I was very interested by this course due to being told it was one of the most well known courses for film making and documentaries. It is said that London and Wales are the places in which most films are made, so why not study making films in the locations where they are made.

Example of Students work
This is an example of someone who is on the courses work and what they have produced. By looking up work done by students on the course I can see the level and the standard of work people have created. This gives me an idea of what standard my work will have to look like and to what level I will become as I become more advanced and learn more skills.

When researching the lecturers for the course these were the people who are said to be in charge of teaching this degree. When doing further research into the most prominent lecturers for example Shafeeq Vellani (The film course leader) I discovered that he is a professional writer/director who has worked on many projects including films and television series for the BBC. I really like the fact the lecturers for this course have experience working within the industry so they can teach us the important things and get us ready to get jobs.

This is a show reel illustrating some of the best work produced and made by students who go to the University of Westminster. Many of these said films/commercials/documentaries are to a very high standard and have a professional feel to them. This makes me more interested in the University due to me knowing that the standard of work is very high.
|
This is a professional video put together by the students of Westminster University studying Film BA Honours to showcase what they do on the course and the level their students work at. From this video I can defer that the course is very competitive due to it the work being to a very high standard and people there are really professional. I want to further research into films created by the students who actually do this course, to give me an idea of what I should expect from this course and how I should improve if joining.
|
These are some additional dates which are on offer to go and have a look at Westminster. However, these dates are very late which if I visited then wouldn't give me enough time to prepare for the University of choose which University I want to go to.
|

I have filled at the form and going to visit Westminster on the 16th June 2018. This date is not being displayed any more on the website, however it was there previously. By going to Westminster I can have a look around the place and see if I can see myself going to that University.
|
Lecturers
This is the head/principal lecturer of the Film BA Honours course in which I would like to study. Peter Hort is the main person in charge and had a lot of experience surrounding film making (20 years within the industry). He has worked alongside many major established production companies as well as BBC and Channel 4. The other lectures on the courses are:
|
UCAS Points
The grade for this course, if I did A Levels would be ABB, this is equivalent to 128 UCAS points. This means I will have to get a Distinction in her course, for a distinction you need 168 UCAS points but for a merit I will get 120 UCAS points. Thus, meaning I need to get a Distinction in order to get the correct amount of UCAS points for the course.
|
Accommodation
The Accommodation at the University of Westminster is more expensive then other Universities this is due to it being based in London. And London is a place where real estate is very expensive. This could be one of the cons of going to city based Universities. However, saying that the rooms go up and down in price due to the size and what each room has on offer. For example, the Double Studio is £230.02 where as the shared room is £127.54.

This course is held at Wiltshire College in Salisbury Campus, the course is a good blend between academic and practical assignments. This course will prepare individuals to work in the film and TV industry. Through out the three years, four years with a placement, students will learn different skills such as how to create documentaries, adverts and short films. This will prepare them for jobs within the industry in the future.
|
Fees/ Payments
The cost for one year studying at Bournemouth University is £9,250, this is usually the general cost for this type of course. However, I will be getting a student loan in order to pay of this large sum of money. As if I do three years on this course that equals to £27,750 for the entire time I am at University. This isn't adding to the fact that I might want to take a placement year as well, this will be an additional £830. Overall, the fees for the course are no higher then any other at the same level, however it does have that added extra due to it having a potential placement year, if I want it.
|
Contact Information
This is the contact information for Bournemouth University surrounding any enquires and how we can talk to them about issue that have risen. As well as this they have an email in which we can use to talk to people who work at the University. I did further research into discovering the address of the University.

Open days
Due to this course being held Wiltshire College in Salisbury, I will have to register for the open day through Wiltshire College in order to be able to see this course and get a taste for what it would be like to go to University at Bournemouth doing this said course. The date which is open for viewing Wiltshire College is on Saturday 30th June 10 to 12. There should be more open days in the future. However, at the moment this is the only open day for this course going.
|
Lecturers
The main lecturer for this course is Andrew Smith, the Bournemouth University website didn't share much information on Andrew Smith. Therefore, I decided to do further research myself and I discovered his LinkedIn page. I discovered information on what he studied at University and his past positions. For example Smith went to the University of Warwick and did 20 years as a member of the BBC TV staff. Alongside this he has also done 8 years of freelance for independent companies. He has a lot of experience in leading courses due to having 10 years as a leader for Film Production and Honours degree.
|
UCAS Points
For this course it ask to you to get 112-128 UCAS points. Due to me doing a UAL Extended Diploma the 112-128 UCAS points means I can either get a merit or distinction in order to be accepted onto this course.
Distinction: 168 UCAS points Merit: 120 UCAS points Pass: 72 UCAS points Accommodation
Due to this course being held in Wiltshire College in Salisbury I will have to have accommodation in Salisbury rather then Bournemouth. I looked up accommodation for Salisbury and the pricing for rooms. I discovered that a standard room cost £110 per week, small premium room cost £120 per week and a large premium cost £135 per week. These rooms are a lot cheaper then previous locations I have looked up for example Westminster. But this is all due to the location area and how expensive the area is.
The accommodation is also includes:

Interview/Portfolio
For the selection process, in order to get accepted into the University, you need to be a creative and innovative thinker. During the interview process in which they will ask questions surrounding what films I like, what things I have done (in terms of filmmaking). As well as this I will have to bring a portfolio of work along as well. This will demonstrate my ability at Film Production and a written piece explaining my portfolio (No more than 500 words). At the end of this process the University will decide if they want to offer me a place, either a conditional or unconditional.

I will have an interview in which I bring my portfolio showing all my current work and projects in the format of the BA (Hons) Film Production want it set out like.

Accommodation
You can get private residential rooms/suites at this University. However it will work out a lot more expensive, and personally I am not too bothered in living in a University hall with others within the University. There are a total of five residents halls for first year students: Bath road, Hurn House, Madeira Road, Winton Halls and George Close. The prices change depending on what resident hall you are, I'm not sure if it's your decision what hall you are placed in or whether it is the Univeristy. They are basically similar pricing, however some are cheaper then others for example Winton Halls and George Close are the cheapest options. Below is the pricing for different rooms sizes and what is on offer for students. Each room should have a bed, desk and en-suite as well as this there are kitchen facilities for students to use in a communal area.

There are also additional costs which will be expected for me to pay for the course I want to do, for example:

Showreel 2017- Examples of students works
This is the 2017 showreel for this course I want to go on. By researching past students work it gives me an idea of the standard of work and the quality people work to. I am very impressed with how professional it all looks and due to it having gold in the teaching scale I am sure with help from the teaching I will soon be able to reach this standard of film making.

Lecturers
Ben Thompson is the principal Lecturer for the Film and Broadcasting department at University of Portsmouth. These are two highly successful and creative skillset courses: BA (Hons) Film Production and BSC (Hons) Television and Broadcasting. He has over ten years as an educator/lecturer in the television and film sector.
In the past Ben was a highly experienced Broadcast Television Lighting Cameraman. He has worked with many UK and international broadcasters, production companies such as BBC, ITV, Disney, Honda, Granada, Endemol, TV Factual, documentaries and live TV. He formally had the role of head of production for an independent production company based in London. |
UCAS points required
The course asks for 120 UCAS points at A levels or the equivalent. Basically, for me I will need to get a distinction or a merit in order to get into this course. This is due to the number of UCAS points given works out like this:
Distinction: 168 UCAS points Merit: 120 UCAS points Pass: 72 UCAS points As well as this I need to have 3 GCSEs above a C grade and that has to include English and Maths. For me this isn't a problem because I have already got this. |
Interview/Portfolio
Interview is not required to get into this degree, however a portfolio is needed with relevant things on it to the course. For example short films that you have made previously and want to showcase.
Accommodation
There seems to be a lot of choice for accommodation for Portsmouth University. You can either choose private accommodation or you can live in resident halls. I would probably prefer to live in residence halls just due to it being cheaper. As well as this there are so many options on room size or even if you want food included (twice a day for some residential halls). However, this greatly affects the price of the rooms per week. This is whats included in a room:
